Kwibuka 28

Kwibuka is a Kinyarwanda word that means “To Remember”. Every year on April 07th, Rwanda enters a national commemoration week that is part of a 100 day period of remembrance dedicated to commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Over the course of a mere three months —  up to one million lives were lost in the atrocities that started on the night of April 06th after the plane of president Juvenal Habyarimana was shot down, and ended on July 04th by the brave men and women of Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF).

The commemoration is a time to remember the victims of the genocide, honor their lives, and carry a torch of hope as we commit to prevent what happened from ever happening again.

The resources linked below will take you through educational documents, books, podcasts, reflections — survivors testimonies and their stories of resilience, as well as the country's journey to rebuild.

Rwanda has witnessed a major transformation rooted in unity, reconciliation, peace, and security. As the country enters the 28th annual commemoration, we invite our community to join the legacy of remembrance and the continuous fight against the genocide and mass atrocities around the world.
